Long-Term CBD Supplementation in Healthy Dogs: Well Tolerated with No Adverse Effects

The growing availability of CBD-infused food and treats for pets mirrors the increasing popularity of cannabidiol (CBD) as a supplement for both humans and animals. However, scientific evidence on the safety and efficacy of long-term oral CBD use in dogs remains limited.

This study evaluated the safety and tolerance of a broad-spectrum CBD distillate (THC-free) in healthy dogs over a 6-month period. Twenty dogs received daily CBD capsules at a dosage of 4 mg/kg body weight, while another twenty dogs in the control group were given placebo capsules.

Study Design

Throughout the study, the health of the dogs was closely monitored. Regular blood tests, urine tests, and veterinary examinations were conducted. Owners also completed surveys assessing their dogs’ overall well-being and quality of life.

Key Findings

The daily dose of 4 mg CBD/kg body weight was well tolerated by the dogs.

No adverse effects on the dogs’ health or well-being were observed.

A temporary increase in alkaline phosphatase (ALP) levels was noted in some dogs in the CBD group. This increase was not associated with any negative health effects and may be linked to bone formation.

Conclusion

The study provides evidence that long-term CBD supplementation at 4 mg/kg body weight is safe and well tolerated in healthy dogs.

Potential Benefits of CBD for Dogs

Anti-inflammatory effects: May help reduce inflammation.

Pain relief: Could alleviate chronic pain, such as arthritis.

Anxiety reduction: May help calm anxious dogs.

Improved sleep quality: Could enhance rest and relaxation.

Potential Risks of CBD for Dogs

Limited scientific evidence: Long-term effects are still under investigation.

Medication interactions: CBD may interact with other drugs.

Possible side effects: Individual reactions may vary.

Dosage Guidelines

The optimal dose of CBD for dogs has not yet been determined. Consulting a veterinarian before starting CBD supplementation is strongly recommended.

Final Thoughts

This study offers promising insights into the safety and tolerance of long-term CBD use in healthy dogs. Further research is needed to confirm these findings and explore the effects of CBD on specific health conditions in dogs.
